Libraries & My Space

Now that I'm finishing up Learning 2.0, I've realized I didn't blog about every single lesson. So, here's what I think about Libraries and Myspace. I've found that it has turned out to be a very useful tool for keeping in touch with those that you don't see very often, or live far away. It's a great place to display photos that you only want your friends to see, and it's fun to be create with graphics and music. Here's my page: www.myspace.com/janellesl

Reflecting on Learning 2.0

How has this program assisted or affected your lifelong learning goals? I would say that it forced me to learn some new things that I wouldn't ordinarily have been interested in.

What were your favorite Learning 2.0 discoveries or exercises? My favorites were creating the myspace page and making movie posters out of photographs.

Did anything surprise you? Yes. I was suprised by myspace. I had a very negative attitude about it before Learning 2.0 and now that I've got a page on myspace, I've actually been able to touch base with some old friends and family that I otherwise would never have talked to. It's been fun.

Was there enough help available when you needed it? Yes and No. The lessons weren't that difficult that I couldn't figure it out on my own. When I needed help, the advocates were usually able to do so.

What could we do differently to improve upon this program’s format or concept? Provide more relevant learning tools. For example, most of the stuff we learned in Learning 2.0, I'll never use again. However, if this program was based on learning new microsoft programs such as Office or Windows Vista, I would find the lessons far more valuable and continue to use what I learned.

Would you like to see similar training opportunities as new library-relevant technologies emerge? Yes and no. There's still nothing better than hands-on training that is provided in an ideal atmosphere. Alot of the Learning 2.0 exercises were completed while on the circ desk, etc. I don't want to see KCLS eliminate hands on training programs for new software, equipment, etc.

And, last one, if you could go back in time and tell yourself to either participate in the program or skip it, what would you do? I would participate, and thanks to Shirley for encouraging me to do so!

YouTube

What I like about Youtube is the ability to watch movie and television previews. I found a preview for a movie I have been eagerly anticipating called Becoming Jane. It stars Anne Hathaway and James McAvoy and tells the story of how Jane Austen got her inspiration to write her novels.

Lesson #22

For Lesson #22 I looked at the 2.0 Web Awards. The two nominees that I found interesting were travbuddy. This is a database where you can find a travel buddy. Perhaps someone to show you around town if you were visiting a particular city.

I also looked at lulu. This is a website that will publish brochures, books, calendars, just about anything you might want to publish.

Google Labs

I checked out Google Labs. I'm not really sure if any of this is my kind of thing. I tried Google Trends, and searched for Disneyland. The link story that looked interesting to me about a Shark Fin at Hong Kong Disneyland had a bad link. Then I tried Summer Movie Previews and got some stuff from 2004.

After that I moved on to Google Mars and looked at some shots of Mars. That's about it.

Library Thing

Thanks to Chris M. I'm actually excited about cataloging my personal book collection! So, now I've created a Library Thing account and will get started. Here's the link: http://www.librarything.com/catalog/janelles
And yes, I am now completing the lessons out of order!

Lesson #19

The Iceberg article was interesting, and I found myself not necessarily agreeing with alot of what they said. My biggest problem with the article was that they seemed to leave out the idea of the library being a "community" place. For one thing, many of our patrons don't want to be self-sufficient. They come into our buildings for some social interraction. What happened to the days of discussing the latest best seller?

As I read on, I found a paragraph from the article titled Into a New World of Librarianship that particularly struck me: "This librarian does not buy technology for the sake of technology. “Techno-worship” does not exist here. Without a firm foundation in the mission and goals of the institution, new technologies are not implemented for the sake of coolness and status. " I liked what he said here. Although new technology is very important, I agree with him that buying simply because it's new, is not the wisest. Unfortunately, we've learned that the hard way at KCLS particularly with Millennium and possibly AMH as well...
